History of Siesta Key

Long before its rise as a tourist destination, Siesta Key was inhabited by indigenous peoples, including the Calusa, who thrived on the island's abundant resources for thousands of years. European settlers arrived in the 19th century, drawn by the promise of fertile land and fishing opportunities. Early names for the island included "Little Sarasota Key" and "Sarasota Key," reflecting its proximity to the mainland. The first homestead was established in 1846 by Captain Louis Roberts, who later played a pivotal role in the island's development.  

The Siesta Land Company, founded in 1907, marked the beginning of Siesta Key's transformation.

The company, led by Roberts, Harry Higel, and E.M. Arbogast, focused on developing the northern end of the island, dredging canals, and building docks. A bridge connecting Siesta Key to the mainland was completed in 1917, opening the door for increased tourism and accessibility. By 1952, the entire key was officially recognized as Siesta Key, and its journey towards becoming a renowned vacation spot was well underway.
