History of Anna Maria Island

Long before becoming a popular vacation spot, Anna Maria Island was inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Calusa and Timucua. Spanish explorers arrived in the 16th century, but it wasn't until the mid-19th century that the island got its name. Confederate Deputy Marshall and Tampa Mayor, Madison Post, settled there and named it after his wife Maria and sister-in-law Anna.  

Early settlers were drawn to the island's abundant fishing resources. In 1892, George Emerson Bean became the first permanent resident, establishing a homestead at what is now known as Bean Point. 1 His son, along with Charles Roser (the inventor of the Fig Newton!), formed the Anna Maria Beach Company, developing the island's infrastructure and leading to further growth and the eventual establishment of the three charming towns that exist today
